Description

James Hardie Hardie® Plank Top Ventilation Profile is an aluminium ventilation trim designed to finish the top edge of a fibre cement cladding installation while maintaining the airflow required behind the facade system.

Installed at the top of the cladding run – typically beneath soffits, rooflines or horizontal termination points – this unique profile allows air to circulate through the cavity behind the HardiePlank boards. Proper ventilation is a critical part of any rainscreen cladding system, helping moisture escape and supporting the long-term performance of both the cladding and supporting timber battens.

Manufactured from lightweight anodised aluminium, the profile is corrosion-resistant, easy to cut on site, and designed specifically to integrate with James Hardie® cladding systems.

What the Top Ventilation Profile Actually Does

  • Maintains airflow behind the cladding
Allows air to exit at the top of the facade system, helping create continuous ventilation behind the boards.
  • Supports ventilated rainscreen construction
James Hardie installation guidance requires a free-flow ventilation cavity behind the cladding with airflow openings at both the bottom and top of the facade.
  • Helps reduce trapped moisture build-up
Proper airflow behind fibre cement cladding assists drainage and drying within the wall construction.
  • Protects ventilation gaps from pests
The perforated aluminium profile helps stop insects and vermin entering the cavity while still allowing ventilation.
  • Creates a cleaner roofline finish
Provides a tidy and professional transition detail where the cladding meets the soffit or roof structure.

How the HardiePlank Top Ventilation Profile Is Installed

  • Fixed horizontally at the top of the cladding system
Installed across the upper edge of the timber battens before the final boards are fitted.
  • Positioned below the soffit or roofline
The Hardie installation guide specifies that battens should finish 20mm below the soffit area so the ventilation profile can be installed correctly.
  • Allows the required airflow outlet gap
James Hardie guidance states there should be a minimum 10mm ventilation gap between the top edge of the cladding and the soffit to maintain airflow through the cavity.
  • Installed to maintain concealed ventilation
Once the final HardiePlank board is installed level with the corner trims, the ventilation profile remains hidden while still allowing airflow behind the facade.
  • Matched to cavity depth
Available in 25mm, 38mm and 50mm depths to suit different batten systems and ventilation cavity requirements.

Why Installers Use Top Ventilation Profiles

  • Helps comply with recommended cladding ventilation requirements
  • Improves airflow and moisture management behind the facade
  • Reduces the risk of trapped condensation within the wall build-up
  • Creates a cleaner and more professional termination detail
  • Lightweight and simple to install
  • Corrosion-resistant anodised aluminium construction
  • Suitable for all James Hardie® cladding systems

A Critical Detail for Long-Term Cladding Performance

Although small, the top ventilation profile plays a major role in the overall performance of the cladding system. By maintaining airflow behind the facade and helping moisture escape correctly, it supports the durability of the full wall construction while delivering a cleaner and more professional finish at roof level.
